King County Superior Court (KCSC) is one of Washington’s most technologically advanced trial courts. During the COVID-19 pandemic, it became an early adopter of hybrid and fully remote trials, later expanding those systems permanently across its facilities.

Technology Overview

  • Courtroom Video Systems:
In 2022, KCSC received a Technology Achievement Award for upgrading 48 trial courtrooms with integrated video systems supporting remote jury selection, virtual witness testimony, and hybrid trial participation.

  • Digital Exhibits (Case Center):
The Court uses the Case Center system for electronic exhibits in civil trials. Parties can upload digital files for shared access by the judge and opposing counsel. Exhibits must follow court naming conventions, and enrollment through the Clerk’s Office is required once a digital exhibits order is entered.

  • Equipment and Presentation:
Both digital and hard-copy exhibits are permitted. Parties requiring specific equipment—such as monitors, projectors, or playback devices—must coordinate with the assigned bailiff at least five business days in advance.

  • Remote Participation:
Following the system upgrades initiated under CARES Act funding, KCSC routinely supports remote jury selection and virtual witness testimony. Between July 2020 and March 2021, the Court conducted more than 600 trials—including over 100 jury trials—using these hybrid capabilities.
